This complete kitchen renovation transformed a dated, closed-off layout into a bright and inviting open-concept space, bringing the kitchen, dining room and family room together as one.
The structural work made it possible. The load-bearing wall between the kitchen and family room came out and a beam went in to carry it, the wall between the kitchen and dining room followed, and the old laundry room wall was removed to fold that space into the plan. Taking those walls out created better flow and made room for an oversized island perfect for gathering and entertaining.
Custom cabinetry extends into the dining area with a dedicated bar and beverage station, set beneath a 36-inch strapped wood hood in Oxford White. The blue herringbone backsplash, illuminated glass cabinetry, quartz countertops, and warm wood accents give the entire space a fresh, cohesive look.
The former laundry room became a walk-in pantry with butcher block shelving, and a new door to the screened porch was framed into an existing window opening while the old doorway was closed up and finished.
Almost 1,200 square feet of white oak flooring ties the level together — 890 square feet newly laid where carpet, tile and old kitchen boards came up, laced into 290 square feet of existing oak in the dining room and entry, then sanded and finished as one continuous floor in a satin water-based polyurethane.
Crown molding was run through the first and second floors, window casings added where needed, and the stone beneath the fireplace undercut so the new floor could run cleanly up to it.
